Ep. 17: April Bowlby - Actress
This week's chat is with my dear friend, April Bowlby. April and I met over a decade ago (wow, has it been that long?) in a scene study class. You might know her from her role as Alan's longtime girlfriend, Kandi, on Two and a Half Men. Or, you may recognize her as Stacy from six seasons of Drop Dead Diva. She's also starred in such films as From Prada to Nada, The Slammin' Salmon, and more.
I asked April to email me some fun facts to share. Here's what she sent:
I prefer baking to cooking. One of my favorite things to do is make jam. My specialty is strawberry rhubarb. For the most part I find endings to be unsatisfying. I eat just the middle part of a pancake. One of my life long dreams has recently come true, I traveled to Iceland with someone I love. I've always wanted to be left handed, and admire people who are. Sense of humor is super tippity top important to me. I'm learning slowly, very slowly, to play the guitar.
In this episode we talk about acting technique, and how auditioning for a part and actually playing the part on set are two different things entirely. April shares how she prepares for auditions. She lets us in on how she presents herself when she's in the room reading for producers, and how she faces challenges on set. We talk about what it's like for a trained, working actress to be in such a rapidly changing field. We also touch on the subject of typecasting.
There's a lot of good stuff in this conversation, but what I really want to get across here is why I admire April so much as an actress. She has brought life to characters, like Kandi, who could fall into the trap of being dismissed as the beautiful airhead. She has made these characters interesting, and has given them hearts and souls. Yes, she's made us laugh, but she's also made us care for these characters. And that, my friends, takes smarts.
I am beyond happy to share this chat with you. Here's my conversation with my lovely friend, April Bowlby.
